The Pastoral Council is a ministry of leadership and service. The Pastoral Council is the primary advisory and consultative body to the priests of the parish, collaborating with them to identify the pastoral needs of the parishioners and to plan how best to meet those needs.
The members advise and offer opinions as well as work on long-range planning and evaluate and support activites of the parish.
The Parish Pastoral Council works in collaboration with the priests of the parish

The Liturgy Group is a sub-committee of the Parish Pastoral Council. It exists to support the priests of the parish with liturgical celebrations and events.
The group includes members with responsibilities for, inter alia, Eucharistic Ministers, Ministers of the Word and Church music. Members of the Litergy Group also help plan events such as Lenten/Advent Devotions, the Fruits of the Earth Mass, the Tiny Tots Mass at Christmas and Masses for the sick (June) and the deceased/bereaved (November).
The Diocese of Down and Connor recognises that all children and young people have a fundamental right to be respected, nurtured, cared for and protected from harm. To ensure that this occurs the Diocese has produced its Child Protection Policy and Procedures booklet and Child Care Committees have been established in each parish to oversee the implementation of these practices.
The Parish of Maghera Child Care Committee has been in place now for almost four years, and during this time the committee, together with the assistance of the Vicariate Support Team and the priests of the parish, has been involved in disseminating the diocesan policy requirements to all parish groups involved with children, young people and vulnerable adults.
In carrying out these tasks, the committee is indebted to all the hardworking volunteers within the parish who work with these groups. Without the support of these dedicated people the committees task would be much more challenging.
